Introduction : Case study: A 30-year-old woman from Uttarakhand underwent Single Incision Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (SILS) by Dr. Mir Asif Rehman in Gurgaon. Learn how advanced scarless gallbladder surgery successfully treated her recurring right-side abdominal pain, gallstones, and fatty-food intolerance with fast recovery at our laparoscopic surgery centre in Delhi NCR.

Patient Profile & Medical History – recurrent Gallbladder Pain

Name: As per Patient (Confidential)

Age: 30 years

Patient Home Location: Uttarakhand

Chief Complaint:

Recurrent pain on the right side near the lower end of ribs for 2 months, especially after eating oily or fatty foods.

Patient Clinical History

The patient, a young 30-year-old woman, visited Dr. Mir Asif Rehman with a history of:

• Sharp pain in the right upper abdomen

• Pain radiating toward the back and shoulder

• Episodes occurring after meals, particularly after consuming fatty foods

• Associated nausea and bloating

• 2-3 attacks since 2 months

Due to increasing frequency of episodes and impact on daily life, she sought a permanent solution.

Diagnostic & clinical examination

After clinical examination, the following tests were advised by Dr Mir Asif:

1. Abdominal Ultrasound

• Presence of solitary gallstones

• Mild gallbladder wall thickening

• No CBD (Common Bile Duct) dilation

2. Blood Tests

• Liver function tests: Normal

• No signs of jaundice or infection

Diagnosis:

Symptomatic Gallstone Disease (Cholelithiasis) requiring surgical removal of the gallbladder.

Decision for Surgery

After the diagnostic evaluation, Dr. Mir Asif advised and counseled the patient about treatment options. Considering:

• Her young age

• Recurring, debilitating pain

• Desire for faster recovery

• Cosmetic concerns (minimal scarring)

Dr. Mir Asif opted for Single Incision Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (SILS)—an advanced technique performed by only a few surgeons in India.

She traveled all the way from Uttarakhand to our Centre in Gurgaon specifically to undergo this minimally invasive, scarless surgery under Dr. Mir Asif Rehman.

Day prior to her surgery routine blood work was done so as to avoid surprise’s on the day of surgery and Pre Anesthesia consult was done to check for the feasibility of administration of general Anesthesia

The Day of Surgery

Single Incision Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (SILS)

• Surgery performed through one tiny incision inside the belly button

• Specialized instruments used

• Complete removal of gallbladder with stones

• No drain tube required

• Blood loss was minimal

• Procedure time: ~25 minutes

• Patient was shifted to recovery in stable condition

Postoperative Recovery

• The patient was able to walk within a few hours

• Started taking liquids 6 hours post procedure and semisolid as soon as she was able to tolerate liquids

• Discharged within 24 hours

• Only one hidden scar inside the navel—virtually invisible

• Returned to routine activities in 3–4 days

• Follow-up ultrasound confirmed normal recovery

Patient Happiness and Surgery Outcome

The patient reported:

• Complete resolution of pain

• Ability to eat normally without discomfort

• High satisfaction with the scarless cosmetic result

• Grateful for a smooth and painless surgical experience

Gallstones: Causes, Prevention & Treatment Options in Gurgaon

By Dr. Mir Asif Rehman, Gallbladder & Laparoscopic Surgeon at Mirascare Clinics, Gurgaon

Millions of people worldwide suffer from gallbladder stones, also known as pith ki pathri in Hindi, one of the most prevalent digestive issues. We see a lot of patients with gallstone-related pain, indigestion, or discomfort at Mirascare Clinics in Gurgaon.

But what exactly are gallstones, why do they form, and how are they treated? Let’s understand.

What is the Gallbladder and Why Do Stones Form?

On the right side of your abdomen, directly beneath the liver, is a tiny organ called the gallbladder. Bile, a digestive fluid that aids in the breakdown of fatty foods, is stored there.

Gallstones can develop inside the gallbladder as a result of improper gallbladder function or excessively concentrated bile.

Common Causes of Gallstones

Gallstones are more common in certain groups of people. The major risk factors include:

Hormonal changes in women – Dr. Mir Asif says mostly women in their 30s and 40s are more likely to develop gallstones due to hormonal fluctuations.

Genetic factors – If your parents or siblings have gallstones, your risk is higher.

Infections – Some bacterial or viral infections can damage the gallbladder and lead to stone formation.

Blood disorders – Rarely, certain blood diseases can increase the risk of gallstones.

In fact, studies and medical practice show that if 10 gallbladder surgeries are done, around 7–8 patients are women and only 2–3 are men.

Symptoms of Gallstones

Doctor Says, Not all gallstones cause problems. Many patients may experience no pain at all from silent (asymptomatic) stones. But when symptoms do appear, they could include:

Pain in the upper right abdomen (especially after fatty meals)

Nausea or vomiting

Indigestion, bloating, or heaviness

Fever or jaundice in severe cases (due to complications)

Do All Gallstones Need Surgery?

There are two approaches to gallstone treatment:

Asymptomatic gallstones – If stones are not causing pain or problems, sometimes surgery is not immediately needed. Regular monitoring is enough.

Symptomatic gallstones – If stones cause pain, vomiting, or complications, surgery is the only effective treatment.

Because gallstones can cause serious complications if left untreated, some surgeons advise preventive surgery even for patients who are asymptomatic. Dr Mir asif says..

Modern Treatment Options at Mirascare Clinics, Gurgaon

Previously, a large incision was made during open surgery to remove the gallbladder (cholecystectomy). However, the gold standard for treating gallstones nowadays is laparoscopic surgery.

Types of Laparoscopic Surgery:

Conventional Laparoscopy – Four small incisions are made (at the belly button, above it, and two on the sides) to safely remove the gallbladder.

Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (Speciality at Mirascare Clinics) – At Mirascare Clinics, Gurgaon, Dr. Mir Asif Rehman specializes in performing gallbladder surgery through a single 11 mm incision at the belly button.

What are the advantages of single-incision surgery?

Minimal pain and discomfort

Hardly visible scar (cosmetically superior)

Less risk of infection or bleeding

Quick recovery and faster return to normal life

How to Prevent Gallstones?

While not all gallstones can be prevented, you can reduce your risk by:

Maintaining a healthy weight (obesity increases risk)

Eating a balanced diet rich in fiber and low in unhealthy fats

Staying physically active

Avoiding crash diets or sudden weight loss

Why Choose Dr. Mir Asif Rehman at Mirascare Clinics, Gurgaon?

Over 7,500 successful laparoscopic and laser surgeries performed

Specialist in advanced gallbladder and gastrointestinal surgeries

Expertise in single-incision laparoscopic gallbladder surgery for faster recovery

Final Thoughts by Dr Mir Asif Rehman

Gallstones are a very common problem, especially among women in their 30s and 40s. While not all gallstones need immediate treatment, once they cause symptoms, surgery is the safest and most effective option.

Myth 1: Gallbladder surgery reduces life span

One of the most common misconceptions regarding gallbladder surgery is this one. In actuality, neither scientific research nor medical literature indicates that removing the gallbladder reduces life expectancy.

Every year, millions of people around the world safely have gallbladder surgery and return to normal, healthy lives.

Myth 2: Gallbladder surgery causes acidity or indigestion

The development of acidity or digestive issues following surgery is another frequent worry. In actuality, acidity is not a result of gallbladder removal.

Gallbladder surgery is not the only cause of acidity; there are numerous other factors as well, including lifestyle choices, stress, and diet.

In fact, you might have experienced pain, bloating, or discomfort when consuming fatty foods if you had a gallbladder that was symptomatic (with stones). This issue usually resolves after surgery, which facilitates digestion.

The Reality: Safe and Effective Treatment

The removal of the gallbladder is a simple, safe, and minimally invasive (laparoscopic) operation. When gallstones cause pain, infection, or other symptoms, it is advised.

You can live a better life without the constant pain and discomfort by having the diseased gallbladder removed.

Advanced SILS Method for Gallbladder Surgery

For gallbladder removal, Dr. Mir Asif Rehman employs the most cutting-edge SILS (Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery) technique.

For the purpose of to insert the camera and surgical tools during traditional laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon typically makes three to four tiny abdominal incisions. Despite being safe and efficient, this procedure still leaves a few minor scars.

The SILS technique involves making a single, tiny incision, usually inside the belly button, to perform the entire procedure. This implies:

Only a single, hidden scar (often almost invisible)

Less pain after surgery compared to multiple incisions

Faster recovery and early return to normal activities

Better cosmetic outcome, since the scar is hidden in the natural fold of the navel

One of the most advanced methods of gallbladder surgery available today is SILS, a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedure that blends safety, efficacy, and aesthetic advantages.

According to Dr Mir, A renowned general and laparoscopic surgeon in India, says Gallstone disease, also known as cholelithiasis, is a common medical conditions in the pancreatobiliary system which solid particles or stones accumulate within the gallbladder or bile ducts. These stones can vary in size and content, causing a variety of symptoms and consequences.

Some Certain parts of the world have a higher prevalence of gallbladder stones than other areas. Even if you can consider it, gallbladder and biliary disease cases grew drastically from 26.35 million (95% UI: 22.79–30.60) in 1990 to 52.00 million (95% UI: 44.20–61.21) in 2019 (EAPC = 2.70 [95% CI: 2.58–2.81]). In India, it is estimated to be around 4%, while in the West, it is 10%.

The global burden of gallstone disease has been increasing over the years, and several factors contribute to this growing problem. Here are some key points to consider:

1. Prevalence:

Gallstone disease is one of the most common gastrointestinal illnesses in the world. It affects people of all ages and ethnicities, but it is more prevalent in women and persons over the age of 40.

2. Risk Factors:

On our website, we have already described how gallstones are caused by a variety of risk factors, including heredity, obesity, a high-fat diet, fast weight reduction, certain medical conditions (such as diabetes), and certain drugs. Obesity and metabolic syndrome are becoming more common in many nations, leading to an increased burden of gallstone disease.

Learn more about gall stone risk factor visit : https://www.mirascare.com/gallbladder-stone-treatment

3. Changing Diets:

High-fat, low-fiber diets have been linked to an increased risk of gallstone development. Gallstones are becoming increasingly common in various regions of the world as Western-style diets become more popular.

4. Obesity Epidemic:

The global obesity epidemic has a considerable impact on gallstone disease prevalence. Obesity can cause alterations in cholesterol metabolism and increased cholesterol release into bile, which can encourage gallstone development.

5. Healthcare Access:

Improved healthcare access and diagnostic capabilities have resulted in greater detection and reporting of gallstone disease patients in some locations. This, in turn, contributes to a larger recorded illness burden.

6. Complications:

Gallstones can induce acute cholecystitis, biliary colic, pancreatitis, and obstructive jaundice, among other consequences. These problems may necessitate hospitalization and surgical procedures, increasing the healthcare burden.

7. Aging Population:

The global population is aging, and gallstone disease is increasingly common in the elderly. Gallstone disease is projected to become more prevalent as the world’s population ages.

8. Emerging Economies:

Rapid economic development in emerging economies has resulted in lifestyle and dietary changes that may raise the risk of gallstone formation. Higher prevalence of gallstone disease have been linked to urbanization and a shift away from traditional diets and toward more Westernized ones.

9. Treatment Options :

Gallstone treatment may include sophisticated surgical removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) techniques such as SILS Techniques or any other nonsurgical approaches such as medicines to dissolve stones. The treatment chosen is determined on the intensity of the symptoms as well as the patient’s overall health.

Dr. Mir says that after consultation with different types of people for gallstone treatment, it is critical to recognise that gallstone disease is a multifaceted disorder involving a complex interplay of hereditary, environmental, and lifestyle variables. Preventive measures like keeping a healthy weight, eating a well-balanced diet, and increasing physical exercise can help lower the risk of getting gallstones.

Medical and surgical treatments are available to patients suffering with symptomatic gallstones. The increasing global burden of gallstone disease emphasizes the critical relevance of public health measures targeted at preventing and controlling this widespread medical condition.

Gallbladder stone is usually not a fatal disease but the human mind is such that it never fails to wander & imagine the worst scenarios. So, if you are also wondering if your gallstones can cause, then you relax! The stones in your gallbladder are least likely to cause gallbladder cancer. Sure it is so true that there is a slight risk of getting gallbladder cancer if you have gallstones but it happens in the rarest cases.

Most gallstone patients do not face any serious complications but at times, it may lead to a few issues which are mentioned below. Gallbladder cancer is the last one on this list because of the scarce chances of its occurrence.

Complications caused by Gallbladder stone are:

Cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder)

Cholangitis (inflammation of bile duct)

Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)

Gallstone Ileus (blockage in the intestine)

Cholecystitis

Cholecystitis occurs when the gallstone lodges in the neck of the gallbladder or in one of the bile ducts. The symptoms include continuous severe pain in the upper abdomen for around 12 hours; fever, nausea, vomiting and tenderness while touching the abdomen.

This is usually treated with painkillers, antibiotics (in case of any infection), fluids given through a drip in the vein and removing the gallbladder altogether.

Cholangitis

Cholangitis is the inflammation of bile ducts. It occurs when the bile ducts are blocked and get infected with bacteria from the small intestine. Its symptoms include jaundice, pain in abdomen and fever. It is a serious condition that requires urgent treatment.

Pancreatitis

It is a condition that mostly occurs when there are numerous small stones present in the gall bladder as they block the pancreatic duct. People suffering from pancreatitis complain of fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain that feels like traveling to the back. This is also a serious condition that demands urgent treatment and removal of the gallbladder.

Gallbladder stone Ileus

This condition occurs when gallstones block the small or large intestine. The gallstones pave their way through the wall of the gallbladder to the intestine, causing a blockage. That’s when the problem of gallstone ileus occurs. The symptoms of Gallstone Ileus are as common as abdominal pain, vomiting, and constipation. But it is also accompanied by abdominal bloating. Gallbladder stone surgery is the most relevant treatment.

Gallbladder cancer

Patients with gallstones are at higher risk of getting affected with gallbladder cancer than the others. But the chances are extremely low, almost scant – most people with gallstones never develop gallbladder cancer. In this case, as well, removal of the affected organ i.e. gallbladder is the preferred treatment alternative,

So, fret not! Get your Gallbladder stone removed and lead a healthy normal life.

Gallbladder stone surgeries are more common than you think. When your gall bladder is attacked by various problems, surgery is commonly the way to go. The primary objective of such surgeries is to take out the gall bladder, which is a part of the digestive system.

Understanding the functions of Gallbladder

A gall bladder is a pear-shaped object located beneath the liver on the right side of the rib cage. Its main job is to store bile, which helps in digesting food. Bile helps with the absorption of nutrients from fats into the bloodstream by dissolving them.

Bile is created by the liver but stored in the gall bladder. The bile secreted by the cystic duct flows into the common bile duct and then the small intestine. It also helps in removing toxins from the body.

Common gallbladder problems

Gall bladder problems occur mainly in the flow of bile from the liver to the small intestines. The presence of either a gallstone or tumor restricts the flow, causing immense pain within the individual.

When it is not working properly or your bile is out of balance, it leads to the formation of hard substances. These are called gallstones which cause pain or biliary colic in the upper right abdomen. These vary in size from a grain of rice to a golf ball. The pain may last from 15 minutes to several hours.

Indications of gall bladder problems include fatty food intolerance, indigestion, bloating after eating, back pain, vomiting, nausea, fever and chills, pain under the right arm, and clay-colored stool. Other problems include infections and inflammation.

Gallstones and tumors don’t go away on their own. Gall bladder attacks are painful and are sometimes confused with heart attacks. Don’t ignore symptoms of a heart attack such as left arm pain and chest pain as possible gall bladder issues.

Before going for Gallbladder surgery

Tests checking whether it is a gall bladder issue include:

Abdominal ultrasound

Blood tests like complete blood count, lipase, amylase

Liver functioning tests

Abdominal CT scan

Radionuclide scan

The results of these tests determine whether you should go for surgery. This surgery is called a cholecystectomy and is performed often. 80% of patients with gallstones require surgery.

In some cases, an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is done. This treats those stones that have fallen out of the gall bladder and into the bile duct. This may or may not be done before surgery, based on the condition of the gall bladder and size of stones.

Dietary restrictions

To prevent and lessen the occurrence of gall bladder attacks avoid fatty foods. Fried and greasy foods cause discomfort and put more stress on the organ. The secretions by the organ increase.

People who have allergies to certain foods or are lactose intolerant must avoid the same. Eating foods you are sensitive to or allergic to repeatedly leads to digestive problems. This results in pain in the gall bladder and other related problems.

Types of surgeries

When you go to a gallbladder stone surgery hospital in Gurgaon, there are two types of surgeries you can get. Both involve removing your gall bladder and the use of anesthesia.

Open cholecystectomy:

This surgery involves your surgeon creating 5-7 inch deep cuts or incisions in the belly to access the gall bladder. These are made based on test and imaging results. The surgeon retracts the liver for better exposure and locates the target. They separate the organ from the cystic duct and artery and pull it out through the incision. This type of surgery is for those who have bleeding disorders or severe gall bladder disease. This is also for patients who are overweight or in the last trimester of pregnancy.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy:

Also known as “keyhole surgery”, the surgeon doesn’t make a large hole in your belly. The best doctor for gallbladder surgery in Delhi NCR Gurgaon will skillfully make four small cuts through which the surgery is done. A thin, flexible tube containing a small light and camera is inserted in those incisions. The tube is 5 to 10 millimeters in diameter. Using the gall bladder is located and identified. Through the use of special tools, the cystic duct and artery are clipped and cut. Then, the gall bladder is dissected and removed from the ports.

Learn More About SILS – Single-Incision Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

What are the Possible Complications of Laparoscopic Gallbladder Stone Removal?

We can all live without our gall bladders. The liver can naturally store, secrete, and transport bile to the small intestine. Though these surgeries are safe, certain problems may arise:

Bleeding

Infections

Bile leakage and damage to the bile duct

Problems with anesthesia and damage to the bowels, intestines or blood vessels

Blood clots or heart problems

Pneumonia or breathing problems

There is a risk of the gallstones going to your stomach, resulting in post-cholecystectomy syndrome. The symptoms of this are similar to that of gall bladder disease.

These repercussions require a second surgery to eliminate. It is rare to do so however.

Recovery after surgery

After the surgery, patients are slowly awakened and shifted to a post-anesthesia care unit for monitoring. During this time, the patient is under close surveillance to see major changes in their vital signs, signs of pain, or complications in surgery. The length of recovery time depends on the time of surgery you received.

If you have an open gall bladder stone removal surgery you need to stay in the hospital a few days after. Patients require 6 to 8 weeks to heal their bodies completely.

Laparoscopy doesn’t take as much time as open surgery does. Patients feel less pain and heal faster after this surgery. Most patients are allowed to go home after 24 hours and return to daily activities after a week or two.

The surgical incisions can be cleaned with soap and water. If the adhesive bandages fall off or there is drainage or redness, you should go back to the doctor immediately.

The best hospital in Delhi NCR for gallbladder stone will ensure that you are informed completely about the procedure. Do not ignore abdominal pain and seek medical attention as soon as you feel the same.

The digestive system comprises of a certain set of organs and chemicals that secrete enzymes to carry out the entire process. GallBladder Symptoms is such an organ that stores a chemical called bile juice. During the process of digestion, the gall bladder contracts and empties it into the small intestine. Bile juice helps with the digestion of fat present in the consumed food.

Gallstones, also known as Cholelithiasis in the medical world, are hardened deposits of bile present in the gall bladder. This happens mainly due to two reasons – either the gall bladder cannot get emptied properly or there is too much cholesterol in the bile juice. This is a disease that needs to be detected and be dealt with as soon as possible.

What are the Causes?

Stones in the gall bladder can form when there is a chemical imbalance. This happens when the chemicals -calcium carbonate, bilirubin, and cholesterol – are present in disproportionate amounts. Medical experts have not been able to single out a cause as to why some people develop gallstones when this chemical imbalance occurs while others do not. However, it has been seen that gallstones Symptoms are more common in people with obesity.

There are two categories of gallstones, mainly:

Cholesterol Gallstones: It occurs when the cholesterol content in the bile exceeds maximum capacity.

Pigment gallstones: It occurs when the bilirubin content of bile exceeds a certain level. This mostly occurs in people who suffer from liver issues, infested bile tubes, and blood disorders.

The presence of stones in the gall bladder can block the pathway of digestive juices flowing to the pancreas. This can, in turn, cause jaundice or acute pancreatitis which would just add on to the suffering and pain of the patient.

Gallstones Symptoms are very common today, owing to our food habits. All of us should be careful to not be a victim of this disease. However, some people are more likely to suffer from gallstones than others, as has been reported by medical professionals.

Women who have been pregnant or are taking oral contraceptives or undergoing high dose estrogen therapies are more susceptible to gallstones. Family history and genetics, too, play a key role in determining if you can be affected by this disease. Losing weight rapidly and regaining may also increase your chances of falling prey to this disease. People taking cholesterol-lowering drugs or women undergoing Hormone Replacement Therapy during menopause are also prone. Going through a lot of stress might also lead to the development of stones in the gallbladder.

What are the Symptoms?

Medical experts have determined a few symptoms that might suggest the presence of stones in the gall bladder. Some of them are as follows:

Infection: This can be determined by fever and shivering as the gall bladder gets infected. Usually, this leads to surgical removal of the stone or stones.

Jaundice: When the stones block the bile duct, the bile juice cannot pass into the intestines and thus seep into the bloodstream. This causes the person with the condition to show symptoms of jaundice. The stones may pass into the intestines but if not, then they are surgically removed.

Biliary Colic: When the stone gets stuck in the opening of the gall bladder, it might cause pain during the contraction. This causes immense pain in the abdominal region of the patient. This is called biliary colic.

Pancreatitis: It develops when a stone blocks the pancreatic duct. This leads to liquid reflux in the duct, thus causing pancreatitis.

Other Symptoms of Gallstones have been Identified Below:

A feeling of nausea and frequent vomiting.

Restlessness and sweating.

Clay-colored stools and/or dark urine.

It is best advised that whenever you face the aforementioned symptoms, you get yourself checked. Doctors, more often than not, find gallstones while testing or treating for some other medical condition. The presence of stones in the gall bladder can be detected by testing for cholesterol, ultrasound, blood test, or during X-rays. Gallstones vary in size and quantity. This, at times, makes it difficult for them to be detected as they do not show any symptoms.

What are the Treatment options?

Usually, when gallstones Symptoms occur, they need to be surgically removed by a medical professional after thorough medical analysis. This occurs only when the stones have caused inflammation in the gall bladder or have blocked the ducts or have displaced the tubes in the intestine. Following are some of the medical processes by which gallstones can be treated:

Cholecystectomy: This process involves removing the gallbladder surgically. This can be performed in two ways – keyhole surgery or open surgery. Open surgery is more common, especially when the inflammation is quite severe. There are cases where even after cholecystectomy, the stones come back after a certain period. To prevent this, the patients are given doses of Ursodeoxycholic acid. It lowers the concentration of cholesterol in bile, thus reducing the chances of reformation of stones. However, gallstones can also be treated without surgery.

Endoscopic retrograde Cholangiopancreatography: If for some reason, cholecystectomy cannot be performed, this method helps. An endoscope travels to the gall bladder and an electrical wire helps to widen the bile duct opening. This allows for the stones to be removed or to pass into the intestine.

Lithotripsy: Ultrasonic waves break the stones present in the gall bladder down to small pieces that can hence, allow them to pass into the intestines and get removed by excretion. This method is used only when there are a few numbers of stones present in the gall bladder.

After the surgical removal of the gall bladder, the liver becomes responsible for the production of bile juice. It is not that a person cannot live without his or her gallbladder Symptoms but some discomforts may arise when it comes to excretion. This occurs because the bile juice, after removal of the gall bladder, flows into the small intestine more frequently. Maintaining a balanced diet, eating a lot of fruits and vegetables, and drinking lots of water can help reduce the chances of formation of gallstones.

Gallbladder Removal Surgery

Gallbladder removal surgery is apparently the best solution to permanently get rid of the troubles caused by the gallbladder. This tiny organ might not get enough attention from you, but once affected, it can bother you with excruciating pain.

Gallstone (presence of stones in gallbladder) is the most common problem related to this organ. Gallbladder cancer and inflammation in the gallbladder are other serious issues that can occur. Either of the problems calls for a gallbladder removal surgery.

And in this blog, we tell you about the types of gallbladder surgery. But before we reach there, let us tell you about some basics about the gallbladder and whether it is safe to remove this organ.

The Function of the Gallbladder and How Its Removal Affects Your Body

To begin with, the gallbladder is a small organ positioned in your upper abdomen. This petite organ is a part of your digestive system. It collects and stores the bile juice – a yellow-colored liquid that breaks down food to aid digestion.

But what happens after the gallbladder is removed during the surgery? Well, let us tell you that it does not affect your digestion process.

Wondering how?

Well, because the bile juice directly starts flowing from the liver to the small intestine, thus continuing the digestion process in a normal manner. So many patients live normal lives despite having their gallbladder removed at a younger age.

When and Why Do You Need a Gallbladder Surgery?

As mentioned above, gallstone is the most common cause that requires you to undergo gallbladder removal surgery.

The stones present in this organ are either harmless that you won’t even know that they exist, or they can make your life hell by causing excruciating pain. There are certain medicines that dissolve the stone but they can take years to do so, and in most cases, the stones reoccur.

In the case of severe inflammation, infection, or cancer, the gallbladder is better removed than stitched to treat owing to its delicately small size.

Chronic pain in the upper-right part of the middle of the abdomen is the first sign that suggests some trouble in your gallbladder. The pain is sharp and may persist for hours. The stark pain is also felt in the back or in the tip of your right shoulder blade. Fever, indigestion, and nausea are other symptoms.

Types of Gallbladder Removal Surgery

You will undergo tests like an ultrasound to diagnose the problem.

Cholecystectomy – The Gallbladder Removal Surgery

The gallbladder removal surgery is called a cholecystectomy. There are two types of Gallbladder Removal Surgery. They are:

3D Laparoscopic Surgery:

Using the latest technology, we can perform Laparoscopic surgery under real-time 3D vision, this aids the surgeon to perform very precise surgical maneuvers and reduce the chances of complications even under complicated and complex scenarios.

1. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy:

It is a rather modern type of surgery to remove the gallbladder. It is a less invasive surgery that takes lesser time to heal and ensures quick recovery. In this procedure, instead of one large incision, the surgeon makes four tiny cuts in the abdomen.

A laparoscope (a mini telescope attached to a camera) is inserted through one cut. Through its lens, the surgeon is able to see the interiors of the abdomen.

Now, the devices are inserted through other incisions to perform the surgery. The surgeon cuts free and takes out the gallbladder through one of the cuts. The surgery is performed under anesthesia and usually takes somewhere between 30-60 minutes.

However, there are some patients who cannot undergo laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. In such a scenario, open gallbladder surgery is performed.

2. Open Cholecystectomy:

It is the traditional open surgery that involves making a 4-6 inch long cut in your abdomen to take out the gallbladder. The abdomen is cleaned with an antiseptic so as to reduce the risk of any infection. After the gallbladder is carefully removed, the surgeon closes and stitches the incision. This surgery is done under anesthesia, which means that you will not feel pain while the surgery is being done.

However, there are a few disadvantages to this type of surgery. For instance, it requires a longer period for hospitalization and recovery. It is an invasive surgery that ends up giving you a big stitched wound, which takes time to heal and pains a lot.

Open gallbladder removal surgery is recommended for patients who cannot undergo laparoscopic surgery

Here are the scenarios when you may have to switch or opt for open gallbladder surgery:

You are overweight.

Your gallbladder is damaged (has scars or inflammation)

Excess bleeding during surgery.

There is scar tissue in your abdomen from an earlier surgery.

What to Expect after the Gallbladder Surgery?

You will be relieved from the hospital in a day or two after the surgery. And it is common to feel pain at the incision sites or in the abdomen for a few days. You may also feel some pain in your shoulders, but it mostly stays for the first two days only.

As for physical activities are concerned, walking and limited movement are suggested. However, avoid doing any strenuous activity.

Don’t take painkillers unless they are prescribed by your surgeon. And see your doctor if you see witness any of the symptoms post-surgery:

Fever

Unbearable pain near the incision sites

Yellowness of skin

Bleeding, swelling or redness from the incision site

Pain behind the chest bone

Constipation or no bowel movement for 3 days
