Although they are typically not painful, their presence may be palpable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For instance, it could hurt if a cyst on the scalp gets caught on a brush or comb.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Usually, cysts only hurt when they get inflamed or infected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Performing an <em>office procedure<\/em> for an <strong>infected sebaceous cyst<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a <strong>40-year-old gentleman<\/strong> who has had a sebaceous cyst for a few years. In the past couple of days, the cyst has become <strong>infected<\/strong>, which is why we are proceeding with drainage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Important to note:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>An infected sebaceous cyst cannot be stitched immediately, as suturing can trap infection and cause recurrence. Instead, we will <strong>drain the pus, remove the sebum and the cyst wall, and leave the wound open<\/strong>. The wound will then heal by <strong>secondary intention<\/strong>, or if it is healthy and uninfected after 2\u20133 weeks, we can stitch it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirascare.com\/dr-mir-asif-rehman\">Dr. Mir Asif<\/a> from Mirascare Clinics<\/strong>, and will show you the step-by-step procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Problem Area &#8211; Cyst is located<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udccd The cyst is located on the <strong>left shoulder and scapular region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We begin by <strong>prepping the area with Betadine<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can see the <strong>punctum<\/strong> and surrounding <strong>redness (erythema)<\/strong>, which indicates inflammation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cyst measures around <strong>4 x 4 cm<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since sebaceous cysts are <strong>subcutaneous structures<\/strong> arising from sebaceous glands, they cannot be pinched from the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Local anesthesia<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Mir Asif administers local anesthesia using <strong>Xylocaine combined with adrenaline<\/strong>. The patient experiences only a small prick during the injection. This is crucial because <strong>leaving the wall behind may lead to recurrence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cavity is thoroughly <strong>washed and cleaned<\/strong> to remove any residual pus or debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The cavity is approximately <strong>2 to 2.5 inches deep<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We leave the wound <strong>open<\/strong> and <strong>pack it with sterile gauze<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Post-procedure care:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The patient will be prescribed <strong>antibiotics and painkillers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain after the procedure is usually minimal, and relief is often immediate compared to the discomfort of the infected cyst.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hygiene is <strong>not a cause<\/strong> of sebaceous cysts \u2013 they occur due to <strong>blocked sebaceous glands<\/strong> and sometimes genetic predisposition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Post Recovery<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;With that, the procedure is complete.
