Who is a General Surgeon and what types of surgeries they perform?

A general surgeon is a highly trained specialist who is trained in the diagnosis and treatment of varied surgical and non-surgical conditions. General surgeon is trained to manage preoperative, operative and postoperative patient care.

As General surgeons, are trained in broad range of subjects, they are knowledgeable and skilled in performing surgery for many different types of conditions.

Q. What types of surgeries does a general surgeon do?

A general surgeon can perform a wide range of surgical procedures from small surgery (like abscess drainage, sebaceous cyst excision, lipoma removal etc.) to larger cases like Open/ Laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery, Open/Laparoscopic complex hernia surgery, Laparoscopic bariatric surgery etc. Also performed all types of proctology related conditions like piles/hemorrhoids, fistula, fissure surgery, pilonidal sinus treatment and others.

A surgeon performs surgery for digestive tract (oesophagus, upper, lower gastrointestinal organs and other related organs), abdomen and its contents, appendicitis, hernia, gallbladder, breast, skin, and soft tissue and endocrine system.

A surgeon who has completed his training in general surgery and, then specialized in oncology can perform surgery for cancer treatment.

Q. How is a general surgeon different from a specialist surgeon?

A specialist surgeon is highly skilled in performing surgical procedure for various parts of the body. They are also trained in pre, during and post-operative surgical critical care and injury due to accidents. However, a specialist surgeon, after having training in general surgery, gets additional training in a particular speciality related to a specific system of the body. e.g. Plastic surgery, Neurosurgery etc.

Q. Can a general surgeon perform dental surgery too?

No, a general surgeon does not perform dental surgery. These are performed by a dental doctor, also known as an oral or maxillofacial surgeon.

Q. Can a general surgeon perform surgeries on children?

Expert surgeon usually does not perform surgeries on children (except for abscess drainage, circumcision, appendicitis etc.), but a paediatric surgeon specialized in performing operations on infants, children and adolescent children.

An anesthesiologist is a specialist doctor trained to give anaesthesia. The anesthesiologist works in association with a general surgeon.

Q. How long does a person train to become a general surgeon?

A medical graduate also called as a general physician which is for 5 years which includes 1 year of internship following which a doctor has to qualify post graduate entrance examination and gain access to a surgical residency program which is for 3 years followed by 3 years of senior residency. In total it takes 11 years of rigorous training to become a general surgeon.
